Water Coloring 101 Part 3....

So You've decide to take up water coloring. What do I need? The last two posts Water Coloring 101 Part 1 covered paper choices and Water Coloring 101 Part 2 covered paint brushes. This week we'll cover what to stamp your image with...

I've got my paper and a brush now what do I stamp my image with? You need a water proof ink. Your going to be getting it very wet. Stazon is an excellent choice. It's water proof and can be stamped on multiple surfaces for other uses. I don't like the smell, but that's just me.
My preferred ink is.. Ranger Archival Ink: Jet Black. I like the Jumbo size of the ink pad itself. It's perfect for those over sized stamps. I've stamped a tone of images and this works for me every time.

What about digital images?
You can print those images out using your Laser Printer. It has to be a Laser Printer. I've tried this a few times and it works. My personal laser printer just doesn't print my images out as crisp as if I stamp them myself. But it is workable. I bought a cheap one to print out all the instruction  sheets I print out. So maybe a better quality one would print a better quality image. I'm not sure.

Again it's in personal choice. You'll find an ink you love and that will be the one you always pick up.

Water Coloring 101 Part 2....

So you've decided to take up water coloring. What do I need? Last week's post  Water Coloring 101 Part 1 covered water color paper. This week we'll cover brushes..

Any paint brush will do. You want them to have a small tip. Depending on what your coloring. For regular paint brushes I try and keep the number below 3. There are lots of different brands to choose from. Grab a couple and give them a try. But my personal favorite is the Zig Tank Water Brushes in Medium and Detail tip. I like these because they have the water in them for me. No little cup of water to carry around. Just grab the brushes and I'm ready to paint any where. You control how much water your using by how much water you squeeze into the reservoir.

Go out to your local supply store and grab a few and give them a try. You won't know which is your favorite until you try some. Use what feels right for you.

Tim Holtz Ink Palette...

I've been waiting for these to arrive. Tim Holtz Ink Palette. I love my color chart, but this I can close and don't have to worry about dust getting into my inks. This will be great for taking to classes too. No more wasted ink. Click the picture to go get you one!

Here's the front of mine. I've added a label sticker. Cause I can already see me using this for other inks.

Here's mine all filled up with the color chart I made. So I know what ink is in which spot. Most of them you can tell what they are just by looking.

I've added a link to my color chart on the left under helpful links if you'd like to print out your own. I printed mine on sticky paper. Then I found a small bee stamp and stamped it in each of the ink spots in the color specified.

Water Coloring 101 Part 1...

Want to take up water coloring, but don't know where to start? Let's start with some basic supplies. Water Color Paper, Water Resistant Ink, Paint Brush, Ink to color with and a stamped image.

The first thing I start out with is a high quality water color paper. I use Canson Montval 140lb Water Color Paper Artist Series. Yes some of your success is in the paper you buy. It all depends on how much water you get onto the paper. I do multiple layers and get my paper pretty wet. So I want a high quality paper that doesn't peel up half way through my project. There's nothing more discouraging then those little ripped up paper pieces. I want a smooth finish when I'm done.

Buy a few different brands of water color paper and see what works best for you. I went through a few before I discovered the Canson Montval that I now use every time. It works for me.

Switch It Up...

Did you buy this beautiful card kit Tree Trimming Kaylee?

How about Holly Day Gwen?

Did you see that they are both in an oval frame? How about changing the images and using Tree Trimming Kayee on your Holly Day Gwen card kit. Or vise versa. You can use the instructions from both to color the dresses different. Or how about adding Gifty Gwen to either of these or both. I try and have other stamps by the same company available so you can pick another option to add to your selection.

How about flipping the paper over? Like I did with Holly Day Gwen here. I try and use two sided paper so you have options when making up your kits. I even turned the layout upside down.

Maybe color her dress a different color selection from a different kit. Or a blue green color, say BG15, BG13, BG11 & BG10. To match the pretty aqua paper. Lots of choices.. Give it a try.
